wasn't there some sort of custom at one time of a man going into a contest of some kind, such as jousting ( as in knights' jousting) wearing something like a silk scarf that belonged a woman?

sorry, I can't answer your question. There may be some beautiful choral music at the beginning of Friendly Persuasion. Also, in case you are not familiar with it, there is beautiful choral music in Borodin, Polovtsian Dances
