Hey Harry,
You've made a valid and supported hypothesis, but I disagree. I do not think they are adopted, even though that makes the narrative more palatable.
The children's ages work with the mother's.
The children look alike, the sisters in particular.
An adoptive state would detract from the weight of what I took to be the work's core message: over-protecting your children leaves them just as susceptible to corruption. As biological siblings, the corruption is much greater.
Boy I hated this thing.
