Oh god the internal dialogue. And half of the time it was completely unnecessary. Ava has a scared look on her face - (internal voice: "This is scary!").
But like you say it has good stuff and IMO potetntial. Cool idea and cool mythology. Jus lots of padding with teen drama. I actually skipped through much of the later episodes because I couldn't stand it, but I still wanted to see where the show was going.
The ending was very cool, so the second season *could* be good. Just ditch the internal dialogue and like you say, tigten it up.
