Honestly I think they just left it in there to continue to show how much of a reckless asshole he is and so the viewer wouldnt be at all upset with Ruth for screwing up the plan with the Cartel and Claire which would essentially free the Byrdes.
Im confident he shot Ben (goat urn) since he was molested when Ben went off his meds.

Bacterial infection from that 3rd world country fisherman killed it. Probably a cocktail of Hep A B and C just from that man alone.
That's what I thought too, how did people see another creature? It looked like a regular floating piece of blood that was used to transition into the alien sniffing out the floating blood particles to hone in on the next target.
More trolls and assholes made it over than regular people seems like.
