‘Star Trek’ Nickelodeon Animated Series Unveils Name + Logo; Set To Debut Next Year – Comic-Con@Home

First announced back in April 2019, the series from Trollhunters scribes Kevin and Dan Hageman and overseen by Ramsey Naito, Nick’s Animation Production and Development EVP will follow a group of rebellious teens who commandeer an old Starfleet ship and head off into the universe for adventure and more.

This move to a younger audience comes as the Trekverse has recently seen the conclusion of the first season of the renewed Star Trek: Picard with the legendary TNG captain and Sir Patrick Stewart. Having started this latest expansion of Roddenberry’s creations back in 2017, the Sonequa Martin-Green-led Star Trek: Discovery is set to return for a third season on CBS All Access later this year. Additionally, as the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks prepares to debut on August 6, the Trekverse has the Spock starring Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in the pipeline and another series featuring Michelle Yeoh’s Discovery character and the mysterious Section 31.

More from NYCC: https://trekmovie.com/2020/10/09/alex-kurtzman-and-cbs-planning-star-trek-tv-through-2027-including-more-discovery-seasons/

Janeway is part of Prodigy for a “wonderful reason”
Kurtzman was a guest on The Hollywood Reporter podcast Top 5, and he revealed that the decision to bring back Janeway has been in place for a year and it “blows his mind” it hasn’t leaked. He also talked about how they came to the decision to have Mulgrew join Prodigy:

When you’re looking at legacy characters you have to have a very specific reason to bring them back. Without revealing too many details Kevin and Dan [Hageman] came in with a pitch that just blew the doors off the place. There was a really clear wonderful reason to bring Janeway into the story.

Prodigy is specifically aimed at bringing in younger fans. The EP talked about how this has been a challenge for the franchise:

I think one of the things that Star Trek has not done as effectively over time is bring in new people, particularly much younger people, and I don’t see any reason why that this amazing story that has existed for 55 years, that is so about everything that we are dealing with in our lives right now, cannot be shared and enjoyed by younger generations.
