As a Bowie fan, no thanks

The review is bad, and anyway I voted with my ears (not that the Bowie estate allowed his music to be used).

Their objections to the film:-

They didn’t like the overt references to Bowie’s sexuality. Durr, Bowie himself was overt about it.

The parallel storyline concerning his elder half-brother. (It's fact, mental illness led to a sanitorium, from which he found his way to a train track and committed suicide.)

The supposed “madness” in the family. Aladdin Sane?

Any authentic biopic or documentary about DB you can recommend for a late millenial?

reply

There is none. The sort of documentary (I think it's called Moonage Daydream) is the best you'll get because they tried very hard to use Bowie's own words to tell the story. Much like Charlie Chaplin, a single Bowie biopic would be very difficult. He lived many lives and almost every one is worth its own story. This one, Stardust, and Velvet Goldmine have, in my opinion, a narrow focus that fails to capture the full dimensions of Bowie's character.

Thank you. I'll get on to watch Moonage Daydream then. I feel ashamed for only knowing one or two songs of his, a man of his calibre.
