2 movies in and I think we can call that R.McAdams and B.Cumberbatch have no chemistry as love interests

Movie wants to pretend that they are so madly in love. But it never feels like it. Rachel McAdams is very flat as love interest. Actors try but it doesnt work.

It same problem with Thor and Natalie Portman. There isnt any sparkle between actors and characters. It was understandalbe how MCU just basically ditched Natalie when Thor was having his side adventures. But then for some reason they brought her back to new Thor and again - she has zero chemistry with Thor in trailers despite film tries me make assumption.

It always felt that Thor doesnt mind to play in dating game when Natalie’s character is around. Then completely forgets about her existence the moment she is not around. Then is like: "Oh yeah. You are my love interest and I suppose to love you", when she shows up.

Same with Strange here. It feels like when Rachel McAdams character is not around - he forgets about her existence. Then writers bring her back for solo movie and he is: ""Oh yeah. You are my love interest and Im madly in love with you".

I don't know if it is really about the chemistry or just the way Marvel has written the characters. I actually don't mind thor and Jane, unlike the many other critics. I am not a fan of Natale Portman's politics and all that regarding the franchise, but I didn't mind her in the role itself. The thing is, Marvel does a great job making these movies fairly non-romantic over all. These aren't really crazy dramatic love stories; they are action adventures. I appreciate that...a LOT...as I am a woman and I love a good romance but sometimes those things take over and leave no room for the actual plot or other stories. Like...I LOVE the original Superman....but the whole Superman/Lois thing really irks me because they spend more time on their love story than anything else. So I appreciate Marvel kinda just has the love interest plot more as the 'meantime' story.

However, that does have it's drawbacks if you ARE looking for the romance. The movies are so fast edited and every one quips and moments between the two people in the relationship are so fleeting. So it comes off like they have no chemistry and that's a shame. Thinking back, I feel like Thor and Jane are the two that do get the most quiet/intimate scenes and I think they are completely sweet together. I buy it. And I am not 100% ready to give up on the Thor 4 plot...I think if they do the Jane/cancer thing, it will make sense on why they 'broke up' and stuff like that. I hope it all comes together.

As for Dr. Strange, yea...it's hard to have exes turn to lovers plot. It always starts off with animosity, coldness, and longing. The two were never on the same page so yea, there's no chemistry coming off of them at all. He's either pushing her away or she's pushing him away. They kept missing each other. It's interesting to see a story where the hero doesn't get the girl in the end. Maybe he'll have something with the Cleo (is that her name?) I dunno.

I think when you watch the movies before 90s, there is this love is the meaning of life and is forever theme, at least in the movies.

Now not so much, love is more about hook-ups, moments of passion, something to pass time when you are bored, that sort of thing. So I think madly in love these days means they go out and have sex when they have nothing better to do.

I think it is likely about increasing labour pool, women have been told family is a small part of their lives, career is more important, etc.

If you watched "Married... with Children", that is a good example. It is a TV show between 1987 to 1997. In it the married stay home women are shown as selfish airheads sucking the life out of their husbands, strong career women are shown more positively. At least that was my take of the show.

If this movie were made in 90s or prior, we probably would see they are together in the end. Now they are both busy career people, their lives are mostly fulfilled, family and kids, they are more optional and too big a commitment, and who has time for it. As it turned out, only the villains.

I can't be certain if it is life influenced by the media, or media reflected what is in people's lives.

Yes. Career woman Marcy was shown in a really positive light on Married... She sure did.

And what's wrong with Cumberbatch? Has he seen McAdams ass?

reply

Honestly, the only characters that (in my opinion) have had any chemistry in the MCU were Paul Bettany & Elizabeth Olsen's Vision & Wanda

I legit bought that relationship. That's it.

Scarlett and Mark gave the right star-crossed lovers vibe.

Really? For me, She honestly had way more chemistry with Chris Evans in 'The Winter Soldier' alone.

The Hulk - Widow thing felt forced af. But hey, that's just me.

reply

Black widow has chemistry with all male between 8 to 80, that is what she does.

She basically is the handler of hulk.

reply

Definitely agree on the handler aspect. The romantic bit still felt forced though (imo)
