Was more so just playing with the eastern culture in the film, the big bad west coming through the gate to change their beautiful land.
shareYou are probably right as far as symbolism goes. If you look at Asian history and western colonialism, it kind of fits.
shareThis film wasn't really concerned with the West at all, it was a Chinese hero vs. a Chinese antagonist and their various Chinese relatives and helpers, and who had to band together to fight Chinese monsters at the end, using Chinese superpower thingies.
The West and westernized Macau were just places the siblings ran to, when they wanted to get away from their father and his Chinese organization.
Of course. We should all be thanking colonizers, especially the Africans. Their backs were just aching for the lash, and the kind westerners helped them out, and they were so grateful their decedents held regular rallies celebrating that even today.
shareChinese, or Asian dragons in general are water related deities or mystic creatures, the rulers of oceans and rivers, and controls weather. So they are worshipped mainly by farmers, praying for good whether and regular rains. A lot of places in Asia had temples of dragons.
Dragon is more of word of translation, they could not be more different from European dragons, which are fire breathing treasure collectors.
Dragons were a positive symbol to the Celts of Europe and the British Isles and Ireland. Later Christians demonized them. Remember, King Arthur's surname was Pendragon.
