Why did no one stop Wenwu?

They were all fighting yet no one went to stop the biggest threat from breaching the Gate. They just kept on fighting Wenwu's minions. I would have thought a few of them would have broke off to try and stop Wenwu since preventing him from opening the Gate was the primary objective. But they just stayed where they were and watched him pummel the Gate.

Yeah maybe they were busy fighting Wenwu's forces but were they just going to let Wenwu keep hammering away at the Gate? I know Shang Chi rose from the lake to tackle Wenwu again but the villagers didn't know this was going to happen.

I just thought it was bizarre. The villagers were like "oh look Wenwu is destroyed the barrier. Lets just stay here and ignore the immediate threat".

Perhaps I'm missing something.....
