I thought I would dislike this, but...

Yeah, I enjoyed it and will watch it again, it was great fun and full of action and gorgeous things and just enough doomed romance to drive the plot. Not great, not deep, but very enjoyable.

And yeah, this is the least annoying Awkwafina has ever been, she was very likable.

As a kung-fun movie it was pretty good. As an MCU movie it wasn’t that bad.

As others have pointed out, it’s a shame the marketing had to go the woke angle, which put many people off. Had it been marketed as a love-letter to classic kung-fu movies while dressed up as an MCU movie, it could’ve faired better financially.

I thought it was a pretty typical, middle of the pack Marvel film, really--neither as bad as some people say nor as good as other people say. That it was a majority Asian film doesn't make it any better or worse that it would have been otherwise, just like "Black Panther" (which was also typical Marvel fare).

I'm something of an MCU sceptic, and I generally prefer martial arts movies to superhero schtick, certainly by now, and it took me a while to get over that and admit I really did think this was a pretty good film, that transcended a lot of what I perceive to be the limitations of the MCU format, with distinct cinematography, production design and score, and exciting action scenes with moments of suspense and tension, and the emotional focus of the second half of the movie grabbed me in. Some have said it descends into the typical overstuffed CGI finale, I'm not sure I agree, the imagery, tone and scale of the scene to me seems different from the usual indistinct crashing, floating and banging. The biggest weakness for me was Shang-Chi/Simu Liu himself; he seemed deathly dull compared to Leung, Zhang, Chen and Yeoh. Awkafina isn't my favourite performer, but I can't deny she makes much more of an impression than Liu does.
