Good series. Worth watching for those who finished school.
If you like leaving your brain at the door and prefer spoon-fed cheese, this series isn't for you.
1899 deals with how perception and memory shapes reality. It's a melting pot of languages. They made this during the pandemic using actors from all over the world. Lots of details in costumes and original set design.
Innovative use of "the volume" virtual set. Very high quality sound design. For example, they recorded the orchestra live, then took that recording and played it through a speaker in an actual hull of a real ship to get truly accurate acoustic resonance. *That* is committent to the craft. Most other sound designers would just load up the "Large Hall" reverb effect.
At first I was shocked Netflix dumped such a high quality production. It's possible though, the second season had nowhere to go that extended the mystery. The main mystery of the first season is solved. We can assume the main character who wakes up on the space ship will figure out how to wake up the other sleeping crew. Obviously there's unanswered questions, but nothing too extreme.
A second series may have been a risk in that the story couldn't continue with the same problem because of what we learn in the last episode. All passengers stuck on the steamboat are now "aware", so they'd be freaking out. Or if their memories are reset then we the viewers of the show, know what's going on so there's no mystery to share with characters. Having said that, the writer is obviously talented and may have come up with something amazing.
