Just watched episode 5...
What an amazing series! I wish this ran for much longer.
In episode 5, I saw a little bit of what I've been waiting for: Bengelsdorf's realization that one can't negotiate with zealots. We saw that start in episode 5 when Lindbergh turned his back on him and when Ford acted like the real Ford of history (Ford Foundation anyone?) I hope in episode 6 the self-important rabbi will unequivocally see that he was chosen by the antisemitic Lindbergh crowd to be their "useful idiot". I want to see him cry, pound the floor. look up to the heavens and scream, "God, what have I done? I was a fool! My ego made me bring great suffering to my fellow jews."
But I don't think it will be anything that dramatic lol.
I think the best part of this great series is the after-episode discussion. I came to understand that the director and his team changed Roth's book... I think it's now much, much better. I can't believe Roth had the father slapping his kid. I can't believe that the boy's love of the American heartland simply vanished in a puff of kissing a girl. It's been years since I read the Roth book, but if that was what was in it, I can't feel overly bad that Roth didn't win the Nobel prize for Literature (although I will always think that Bob Dylan was a joke).
The Plot Against America is the only show I actually wait for each week. Bravo to David Simon and Ed Burns for a timely, dramatic, beautifully filmed show (the sets rock!). And bravo to Peter Sagal for being the perfect foil for David Simon so we, the audience, can understand all the thought that went into the story, the changes from the book, the sets, and the acting. What's next? lol
