It’s made for the Asian marked, with Chinese money, Chinese instructions with a mix of Chinese and foreign crew.
95% of Chinese films have terrible scripts and directing. Very few in the west care for a large fish but in Asia this is tied in to folklore. They have their eyes peeled watching this.

Yes, if you're an ugly fat neckbeard of a white man, Asians won't go anywhere near you. But if you're even just half decent looking, Asians will absolutely go for white men with many actually preferring them over Asian.
