the problem with the world today is nobody thinks without a pre-bias of some sort. (i'm referring to nolan and the op)
Nolan has named Alien and Blade Runner as two of his favorite movies of all time. It's safe to assume he's a fan of Ridley Scott.
Also it's worth mentioning that Nolan's next movie is The Odyssey. A historical-epic with fantasy elements. I think the historical-epic genre is vogue right now for him given his current schedule, which is probably another reason Gladiator II was something of particular interest to him.
Personal relationship, I would say.
