shareI did think filling Colosseum with water and have navy battle shows in it was a bit silly and over the top.
shareFeaturing CGI sharks!
shareWhy? They actually did flood it with water and stage naval battles.
According to historical records and archaeological findings, the Colosseum was flooded to stage naval battles, known as naumachiae, during the reigns of Roman emperors. These events were part of the arena’s entertainment program, showcasing mock sea battles with elaborate sets, ships, and even artificial islands.share
Emperor Titus is specifically mentioned as having ordered the Colosseum to be flooded for a naumachia, which replicated the battle between Athens and Syracuse (413 BC). The event featured flat-bottomed ships, artificial islands, and even domesticated animals trained to behave in water.
Yes, I know that now, @Rorikon also pointed it out.
But you have to understand my surprise, since Rome has a bit of distance to the shore, also flooding Colosseum with water requires insulation, also moving ships into it, all those are pyramid level herculean tasks.
Kudos to Roman civilisation for such accomplishments, though the extravagance is way over the top.
I recently found out myself when watching a documentary with my youngest son. I was equally surprised.
I was also unaware of the retractable shade awning.
Special effects seem to be getting worse as the years go on.
sharethe monkeys were some of the worst CGI ever seen.
