I think Paul Mescal is the actual main lead, he (Lucius) is the gladiator, and the guy on the poster.
I think they used Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal as support cast because most people don't know the guy's name, and Denzel Washington (Black) and Pedro Pascal (Latino) are a lot more bankable, and politically correct.
