I sat there. physically cringing and in discomfort about how bad every single line was delivered... I really dont get how he passed casting at marvel who tends to normally be pretty darn good with some exceptions (Larson). Smartly they rested the Thanos mantle on a capable actor like Josh Brolin.
Im also surprised how few agreed. in Facebook posts it was nonstop praise. and when I did bring it up they said "he was supposed to be like that!!! hes insane and has been alone millions of years"
But that just seemed like an excuse to justify bad acting from anyone playing a "crazy character". I mean maybe this guy can play the other Kang variants better...... maybe his crazy acting is just particularly bad and he can do menacing and serious?!
I feel like those will also be over acted too however
I like big and camp. to me it was just pure bad. it wasn't even winking at the audience. it was that kid in high school drama class who thinks they are good, puts on a bad accent and overacts massively thinking they are Daniel day lewis.
it wasnt just big delivery. it was bad delivery, pausing and thoughtful slow delivery when there shouldn't be. no actual gravitas to anything he said. just thinking "if I yell here it makes it sound profound and big right?!?
The first time I saw the series, I thought he was overdoing it. The second time, I thought it worked, I'll see what I think the third time.
The thing is, this guy had to not just carry the weight of the finale with a lot of suspense building up to his appearance, he had to spend the final episode monologuing for about 45 minutes! A massive challenge for even the best actor! I mean he had to play it big, really, REALLY BIG, but I'm still undecided as to whether he was just too big.
Can’t lie either… I loved him too! (As well as the fragile red pill babybro target that is Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, which was another Marvel win.) What do you know? XD I mean, damn that Majors killed it!
[But here we go again]
Ok, while I am one of those who thought he acted the role like he was meant to *gasps* and was effective overall, I can understand why he was off-putting to some. Alone you’re definitely not. That said, all those praising him are just trying to justify supposed bad acting by a terrific actor in this role? Hehe. No, we argue this is simply the performance that was needed. A very old and very tired being who’s goofy and eccentric? The popular opinion you find unpopular: he performed the way he needed to which was appropriately very over-the-top. Nay? Well, I say the clown training this talented actor (yes, he made a name for himself acting in serious roles) received at Yale certainly came in handy even if those like you believe he was… not right.
But, we’ll see if those future variants will be acted like you feel they shouldn’t by him even though this actor knew what he was going for as this variant. What he brought to this role/variant was very specific. Now you can disagree all you want and say that I sound like everyone you’ve seen on Facebook (surprised he’s been received well over there, whereas in this “oh-so happy” joint you’ll find many are naturally with you), but I have no doubt the acting and range he will show later down the road will prove some of his current detractors wrong. As such, looking forward to seeing him NAIL it as the other variants/Kang like he is supposed to — again! ;)
you can see eccentric done well. especially by a villain. that was just bad. I get its subjective but still im sure if you were to contrast the two (his performance and a commonely accepted good performance of an eccentric person) it would highlight the flaws of his over the top bad delivery.
I hope he is good in the future. I haven't seen his other stuff so no clue
I think Larson and Majors were more of a directing issue than an acting or casting issue. I liked Larson’s performance much better in Endgame than in Captain Marvel. I thought Winters was fine, but I know a lot of people didn’t like his performance in Loki. I expect when he plays different Kangs, and with a different directors, people will like him a lot more going forward, but only time will tell.
I think Larson was fine. as you said it was the directing (and script I guess) more than her herself. Its not as if Larson chose to be so OP that it kind of ruined the portal tension in endgame and hence the need to send her away. The story was fine although I do find it massively missed oppurtunity to have the skulls as victims. when they could have literally had two more phases of "omg captain America was actually a skrull and this is why characters being impersonated did XY and Z"
Majors was just cringe. over the top to the point of embarassing. He seemed to think acting quickly and using odd pacing and then yelling things made him seem deep and truly insane.
id show it as a "what not to do and bad acting 101" video.
take Heath ledger as a prime example of how to do crazy. take Gary Oldman in true Romance or Leon as how to do deranged and crazy (albeit he is different). take Daniel Day Lewis in almost anything he does.
No one will ever look at majors performance in that episode and later look back and say "wow. astounding. that was great"
What is really strange was that it came out he was originally just playing a character called "he who remains", and after seeing his performance Feige wanted him to be Kang the Conqueror and he was cast for Ant-man 3. Don't get it.
