Italy in Final

Deservedly.

I was hoping for Spain.

Fantastic match, I was hoping for Spain too, but thoroughly enjoyed.

Popopopopo! *sings*

I'm glad the Italians won for no reason other than I thought the Spanish keeper was guilty of pretty poor sportsmanship in the shootout.

Bouncing back and forward along his line. Did the same thing against the Swiss. Happy to see that kind of thing fail. Until I saw him doing that again I really didn't mind who won.

Nothing wrong with that.

In the old days keepers were allowed to move forward from their line to narrow the angle but now that's been banned. Now they can only move on the line.

Every advantage counts.

I don't think keepers were ever "allowed" to encroach by jumping forward.

The old wording was that they were supposed to "remain on his goal line until the ball is kicked". In practice they would always try and steal a march on the striker to reduce the angle. The new rule explicitly stating one foot on the goal line until the ball is struck is better but I'm sure we'll still see keepers get away with it, although not so blatantly.

At one point, they were specifically banned from moving along the goal line (or at all) until the ball was struck. But, although technically legal, I found what the Spanish keeper was doing to be pure gamesmanship. I'm glad the Italian keeper didn't follow suit.

reply

absolutely nothing wrong with what he did. Keepers have been doing this for as long as I have been watching. They will also delay the kicker if they can. I remember the famous Bruce Grobbelaar waving his arms and legs like he was drunk in the sole attempt to put the kicker off and it worked.

It is a game of cat and mouse and either player will try and create an advantage.

The keeper moves side to side while the player stutters before kicking the penalty.

It is all part of taking penalties.

reply

V England hopefully.
