Question on last shot before credits. . . .

SPOILERS WITHIN - - - - - - - -

The very last shot when he comes up to the surface of the pool to catch his breath and sees a blurry figure -- is that supposed to be Hemsworth?

reply

It's up to each individual viewer to decide. I'm going with that it is. Mainly just because I hate when the main character/protagonist dies. Also, people have pointed out that the kid does exactly what Hemsworth did when he was in the water at the beginning of the movie. Where did he learn to do that and exactly like Hemsworth? Doesn't seem like a common thing to do. So some are saying that he survived and is looking out for the kid and taught him some stuff. Maybe being some father figure to him. Could just be a goof/error though. But they are on to something. There is also that whole rule thing that we didn't really see him die. He was just all banged up and stuff and fell in the water. No one really declared him officially dead.

reply

I usually prefer the hero to live as well, but there's a quality to the hero sacrificing himself for a higher good that makes for a very powerful story.

reply

I still would rather prefer the main character to live. A lot of times when the hero dies to sacrifice himself, the re-watch value drops 80% for me. But the director has came out and gave an official confirmation on the ending. Originally he does die at the end. That's how it was in the script. But they shot a new ending and shot all kinds of variations of it. He confirmed the ending is ambiguous and up to each individual. If you feel he died, then he died and the kid is hallucinating. If you want to see him live, then that's really him standing there. Can't supply a source to what the director said. I saw it on Facebook. Can't remember which movie site posted it. Maybe Comingsoon .net or Comic Book Resources or ComicBook .com. It was some site that posted it on their Facebook page. Can't really post stuff like that on her. Not sure how to do it either.

reply

I'm going for yes it is him !

Would like to see a follow up to this , really enjoyed it !

reply

Agreed, I would definitely watch a sequel. I wonder if that is what Netflix is thinking.

The critic and audience scores haven't been phenomenal, but they've been good enough to say that they are overall positive, so hopefully that will help.

reply

Fingers crossed ;)

reply

The director came out and confirmed the ending. Saw an article that a movie news site posted on their Facebook page. The ending is officially ambiguous. In the script he originally died, but they decided to shoot an additional scene (the final shot) where it left things opened. It's definitely up to the viewer to decide. They were sure some fans wanted to see him live, so they created that final shot to allow each individual to decide on what the final shot meant. So if you wanted him to still be alive, then that's him. If you wanted him to die, then the kid is just hallucinating him at the end.

reply

I'm sure it's supposed to be him, yes, but man, it is so incredibly unrealistic that he could ever survive getting shot to shit and then falling seemingly unconscious (or close to it) in a river.

But hey, it's a movie, right?

reply

You left out the part that is was a river in India, probably the nastiest rivers in the world where the amount of bacteria would have given him sepsis before he could ever get to a hospital. He would probably have died just from getting a minor wound submerged in that shit.

reply

True that. That river was nasty, no doubt.

I understand, of course, the need for suspension of disbelief, but this film is really pushing it by implying that he ends up finding a way to stay alive. This isn't a Marvel movie.

reply

Yeah. He was pretty banged up. Shot through the neck. Without immediate medical assistance, I can't see him surviving and considering all his buddies flew/drove off, I'm not sure who would be able to administer that. Especially in such a hostile environment. Not to mention I'm sure that river is absolutely filthy and crawling with bacteria, excrement etc so infection is inevitable. I imagine he'll have some form of IFAK on him so he might be able to patch himself up albeit temporarily. Still needs help though.

Of course the jumping into water and hiding was established at the beginning so no doubt that's what they're implying but he obviously wasn't in top physical form so how effectively he could repeat that I don't know. Perhaps we're supposed to think he hid for a bit then floated down river. His radio survived and he was able to call his people for a pick up.

reply

Yeah. I mean, even if someone had jumped right in after him I would have serious doubts about his chances of survival. And considering that didn't seem to happen, I'd have to say his chances are pretty close to 0%. It is in no way believable.

But hey, I liked the movie and would be down to see a sequel, so if a miraculous escape is what is necessary to get us there then I can forgive it.

reply

What we didn't see was the submarine waiting for him. All part of the plan lol

reply

Director has confirmed the ending. He originally died in the script, but they shot an additional scene to leave things ambiguous and for the viewer to decide what the final shot meant. They figured that some viewers would want him to still be alive. So if you felt he died and couldn't survive all those shots he took, then he died and the kid was just picturing him standing there and stuff. But if you wanted him to live, then it's really him standing there. No one is right or wrong about the ending. It's what you personally want for the character and the director confirmed it's ambiguous and up to the viewer.

reply

I'm also of the mind that it is Hemsworth at the end. Could have also sworn that I read that they wanted to keep the ending open allowing them room for a sequel if the film did well.

reply

Original script had him die. Test audiences were not happy with the ending and Netflix wanted a possibility of a sequel if the movie did well which is why you have the ambiguous ending you have. It was a compromised ending that was supposed to allow people to believe what they wanted and not piss the writer and director off too much.

reply

That's interesting. Until the very end, I assumed he did die and I was okay with that. There's something beautiful about a Christ-like self-sacrifice for the welfare of someone else. Having him live blunts some of the impact of that.

I wonder what the numbers are going to end up looking like in terms of how many people stream this thing, and if the numbers are going to make Netflix happy enough to greenlight that sequel.

reply

Well, with them confirming the ending is ambiguous and stuff and we can decide if Tyler/Hemsworth is still alive, the re-watch factor for the movie has gone up for me. I'll even buy it on Blu-Ray (Netflix usually releases their content on Blu-Ray eventually) and I'll watch the movie a few more times on Netflix. If I get bored and don't want to get into anything new, I'll watch Extraction again. I enjoyed the action. So I'll do my part on trying to get a sequel made.

reply

I thought the same as many of you that if they write it to where he survives they will have to explain how they dealt with the high level of biological pollution in that water, in addition to heavy "normal" first aid. I can't help thinking that his handler lady (Neysa?) would be instrumental in getting into the river and saving him if they do write that into the sequel. Her role is one of total bad-assity in the action - Ovi's survival on the bridge would basically have been impossible without her taking out the helicopter and then the sniper. And of course 8 months later she gets full-on retribution by coolly taking out the kingpin face to face. It's not often in a story that what should be a secondary character is allowed such a high caliber of prowess and ability. I thought she was very powerful and very likable.

reply

She was a likable character, yes, sans the fact that she seemed willing to just let Ovi die earlier on in the story. If they do make a sequel then they definitely should make sure she's in it, and I'm certain they will.

reply

I noticed that too - the lady at first only wanted to leave the kid and just save her operative. That is the one flaw keeping her from hero status. But she seemed to transform. One thing we don't get to know is the motivation behind the assassination of the drug lord at the end. Hard to believe she would be involved in that kind of operation without a payday attached to it, but it leaves it open that it may have been purely retribution for the events in the movie.

reply

He lives. Yes, that's him. Director should have just shown him clearly not shown anything at all. That was a very poor way doing this though.

reply

No, it was Gaspar and he would have his revenge on Ovi. Starting from the ears... then fingers...

reply

I know it's their ticket to a $equel but I prefer to view it as Ovi being plagued by the constant split-second illusion that that might be his savior over there ... the only person that treated him as a valuable human and not a package. Tortured by an emotional vision similar to Rake.

(My box started playing an older film by the same name with a post-stroke Danny Glover. It was worse)
