Mostly sort of meh

I watched this because it's Halloween month and this was described as a 'comedy, horror, mystery'. There's no horror in this movie. Very little comedy. Very little mystery. Most of this movie is just treading water.

The initial premise is that nebbish Norval (Elijah Wood) travels to a remote location to reconnect with his estranged father (great Canadian character actor Stephen McHattie) who contacts him after a 35 year absence. He's confused though when his father seems uninterested... even disdainful... of him.

The movie then takes a hard turn when the father abruptly dies early, and Norval gets caught up in the minor mystery part of the tale. There are a few abrupt bits of violence that might make you squirm, but between them there are long stretches of nothing much happening.

It really needed a better script. For me the biggest surprise was that it was filmed in my own backyard here in BC Canada... something I was unaware of when I sat down to watch it.
