As soon as (spoilers)
I saw them smash homie's face with the viking hammer, I'd be planning my escape.
shareI saw them smash homie's face with the viking hammer, I'd be planning my escape.
shareWell, the group were shocked as hell.
But the oldest explained it to them.
I think soon after that incident two of the group tried to escape.
I'm sorry but NO amount of explaining smashing in a man's face is going to placate me. I'd go along to get along till I could enact a viable escape plan.
shareI can understand the group staying up to a point. They weren't there to join the cult after all, only as observers. With two of them vying for thesis material.
What would have tipped me off wasn't so much the act itself, but that their friend didn't tell them about this ritual ahead of time (not to mention his excuse for not telling them).
And what REALLY should have alarmed them was the engaged couple disappearing. Dani was perturbed by the circumstances, but not enough. The rest of her group was just too self absorbed.
I think, as terrible as it was, the jumping was their own choice. When he was still alive and they smashed his face in, that was straight up, murder. I now know these people are evil and I need to tread very carefully and GTFO.
shareToo self absorbed...hit the nail on the head there. That skin the fool guy also heard Connie scream in horror...but didn’t make much of it.
Yeah I’d be planning an escape too. The only thing I’d be worried was the level of surveillance they had. The black guy was killed sneaking out at night and taking pics of their holy book, maybe they anticipated he’d do that and kept surveillance on him.
But still...id try to find a way out towards the main road, maybe at midday when everyone is busy doing something. At night you might get lost, even if it may be easier to slip away.
You can say that again.. "Feets don't fail me now"
shareThe scariest part of that whole sequence is that you know if you say, "I want to leave," that there's a risk you're getting your face hammered (which is exactly what happened to two of them). But, on the other hand, if you play it cool so you don't arouse suspicion, you run the risk of, say, getting burned to death in a bear or have your lungs angel-winged in a chicken coop.
That said, there was a surprising lack of fear from most of those (newcomers) present, and I'm surprised, "Let's get out of here," didn't become a number one priority, especially for Dani - who is not an anthropologist.
Watch the extended Directors Cut; It is fantastic, and really fleshes out the story, and character motivations in many ways! There's a whole scene where Dani tries desperately to convince Christian to leave right away after the cliff dives.
shareThat does sound like an important scene. I'll have to catch up with the Directors Cut soon.
shareI found the scene on youtube, so here ya go, but I would instead highly recommend watching the entire Director's Cut. There are many more scenes worth watching, and in the correct order with the movie makes them more impactful for sure:

Very helpful clip thank you.
Wish they had left that in the film. But in a weird kind of way I can see why they didn't.
Mm... yeah, that would likely help. It's already a long movie, though, but I guess they left some good stuff on the cutting room floor.
Of course, now that I'm thinking about it more, maybe that scene would have just planted in my mind that she wanted to leave, then when she didn't, maybe I'd go, "Why did she just drop that when she was so passionate about it earlier?"
