Are Universal studios proving that VOD doesn't impact box office returns all that much?

Popular perception is that releasing a film digitally early in the films theatrical run is a bad idea as it will hinder the theatrical revenue yet Universal have been releasing films digitally and also on Peacock shortly after theatrical debuts yet are still making plenty of money.

M3GAN is the latest example, it got released digitally 18 days after it's theatrical release in the USA, it's gross worldwide currently stands at $146 million.

When you look at their releases last year such as The Black Phone, Nope & Halloween Ends you see films that grossed plenty of money even with rapid release on digital platforms.

I think it's becoming increasingly clear that a film getting a VOD release doesn't have a great effect on the box office return.

The window for theatrical releases continues to shrink as smaller budgeted movies can recoup more money via streaming sooner than later. The major exceptions are big box office draws like Top Goon and Avatar

The thing is - it does not matter of theatrical revenue is hindered because theatres arent primary revenue sources anymore.
