I’d call it a fantasy fiction historical dramady. I think it’s more like a soap opera than anything else. It’s beautifully filmed. The costumes and sets are weirdly anachronistic but sumptuous. The plot is light and the characters aren’t very complex but if you accept all that it’s engaging entertainment. It has some overt comic scenes, like the one where the mother explains sex to her daughter using rain soaked fields and basset hounds as metaphors. Overall it aims to be like a Shakespearean comedy about love and folly, but lacks all the genius and depth of those plays.
