Episode 2 was written by Jane Espenson, and it shows!

It seemed like an episode from Once Upon A Time with higher budget....but in a good way!

Haven't seen this other story called "Once Upon a Time."

What happens in it that reminds you of The Nevers???

reply

Its a tv show about fables, very different by The Nevers (altough they are both shows with many female characters) but its the writing style of Jane Espenson that created this "Once Upon A Time effect" on this episode in my opinion. She tends to write about female friendship (Primerose and Myrtle),and about love (Augie and Pennance). And also likes to write sarcastic male characters like Hugo.

Which character is HUGO???

Did a search of Jane's name and Found this TIME LINE that says this:

Timeline

2009:

In January 2009 it was announced that she had joined the spin-off series Caprica as co-executive producer and would take on showrunner duties midway through the first season.

So this show would be the reason why her name looks familiar. Have you seen it? It was another SCI FI show that was a SPIN OFF of the remake version of BSG (Battlestar Galactica).

But it wasn't really a fable or about female friendships or about sarcastic male characters. So this show is still the only one I've seen that she's written where I'm familiar with those kind of issues taking place.

Have you seen the other NEW HBO show called "MARE of EASTOWN" that airs right after The NEVERS was aired??? That's also another good story about female characters with what one might also call some sarcastic male characters. But the leading FEMALE character is probably also the most sarcastic character of them all (and probably also with pretty good reasons to be that way).

Because instead of choosing to attend a 25th celebration in her honor, every single member of her family (her mother, daughter, grandson) chose to go to the engagement party of her former husband (that her teenaged daughter had also helped to plan on the same night as the other celebration for her mother took place).

So try to check it out if you haven't seen it yet. Because with the subtext of the events we see unfolding, my guess is it's the former hubby who's responsible for the divorce (even though on the surface it also appears as if the wife might be the one who is most responsible for the divorce that took place).

But also NOTE the way both the grandson and the daughter still live with the MOTHER and not with the father. Plus her mother also lives with her as well. And that's also a lot of mouths to feed for a working mother who also mothers several other members of her town.

I know Jane Espenson from Buffy and Once Upon A Time. By the way Hugo is Hugo Swann, the one friend of Augie who owns that secret brothel

reply

Ok. So Hugh is the RICH GUY who also owns the FERRYMAN's club where they have the SEX parties. Is that what you mean by referring to a secret brothel??

Because apparently his club and what goes on there also isn't a secret to the rest of the other RICH men who know him???

reply

Yeah its him. I guess its not official but everyone knows about that club, you are right! I didnt remember the name of the club.

reply

One review points out how the name FERRYMAN is a play on PHEROMONE (the SEX HORMONE that we excrete to attract a mate).

So that's the reason why it was so easy to remember the name of it after having read what that review said about it.

Plus we also hear HUGH mention the name of it again in Ep. 2 (which I'd probably also not have paid attention to without having read the review).

Reviews can be very helpful in catching stuff that you've missed or overlooked.
