I was totally on board at first.

It was subtle. Nuanced. The performances were low key.. and subtle... and well... nuanced. Added to the normality of the town and the characters. Very peaceful despite the building dread. Then the dread didn't build any more. Nor did the excitement. As the movie went on, the more it felt flat. The subtlety and nuanced nature turned to dullness. Secondary characters died with no tragedy or sadness for them, nor humor. Like anything else in the movie, they just happen. In the end there is no payoff. Just a conversation between two characters that made me want to turn it off. I would not have missed anything if I had, aside from an end to Tilda Swinton's character, which did nothing more than create more questions. Cannot recommend.

I'm in the same boat. I was actually really digging the sleepy town quirkiness of it and then it all fell apart once the zombies started showing up.

This was sooooo close to being a good movie and you're right it started to feel flat in the middle then the bad ending. When the character kept saying this isn't going to end well, he might as well have been referring to the entire movie itself. If I re-watch the film I'll simply stop the film at the point where the two cops are left in the car and before the fourth wall gets shattered.

I really want to know if they started filming with this ending in mind or did they not have an ending yet.

He read the script, so yes, it was a meta comment on the script itself! ;)
