The Krauts lost countless lives during trench warfare and battled for every inch and then decided to try to TRICK the Allies into thinking they retreated miles back.
Hoping the Allies would happily walk into a bigger trap?
Why didn't they just set the forces up WITHOUT moving back?
Wouldn't the Allies figure out it was a bad idea going over the top after an initial test wave, thus undoing the whole trap?

Germans moved to a better entrenched position. Its also worth noting that by 1917 the germans were already suffering high attrition due to running out of men and supplies.
