Dan Levy's character, John
At the beginning, I was groaning when John acted like the overly-exaggerated, stereotypical gay man.
I'm not gay, but I've noticed that a lot of supposedly progressive entertainment creators write cardboard characters whose identity & strength is based on flimsy stereotypes, instead of giving their characters true depth as individuals. As a result, their stories tend to be laughably terrible & amateurish.
So I was pleasantly surprised when John actually drove all the way to Harper's house to rescue Abby. Then he stuck around and repeatedly comforted Abby when she needed it. That's what a truly caring friend should do.
John went from being a cardboard character to a highly admirable guy in my eyes. Even though I disagree with his ideology (that patriarchy stuff), I'd definitely value a friend like him.
His redeeming characterization is one of the factors why I liked this movie.
