What IS with this habit of churning out show after show in such a short time?

I don't think I've ever seen so many TV shows, of any genre, produced one after the other so fast like some kind of rapid assembly line. It's really more about quantity rather than quality these days, and yet 95% of the shows get cancelled eventually, it's really rather pointless.

Why do entities like Netflix and Disney+ feel the need to make their own content just to keep subscribers? I was shocked when I saw how much of Netflix's output was their own junk material, why can't they just show old TV programs from yesteryear? Stuff like that is what MADE Netflix in the first place: QUALITY.

I suppose it's like the old argument about the BBC back in the day: people who had to pay the TV licence just didn't tolerate repeats, and there were often repeats on BBC TV.

I guess if you throw 10 turds at a window, one of them will stick. creating original and creative content is no longer a viable commodity. we will never have shows like Mash, Seinfeld, Cheers. everything these days has some sort of woke or SJW message.

its easier to churn out the same old thing, like the MCU and Star Wars, they are going to milk those franchises til people finally get sick of it.

prob the most interesting and creative show I have seen in the past few years, is What we do in shadows. unfortunately they only do 10 episodes a year. I have been trying to spread the word about it. its pretty funny but in a dark way.

I presume it's because whenever a Marvel or Star Wars show hits Disney+, the number of subscribers goes up.

Disney knows how to play a long game, they will do whatever it takes to claw out a foothold in the streaming world that can be expanded into their primary filmed entertainment outlet, if the movie theater industry collapses.

I guess because of the influx of streaming services, they feel they must pump out series after series to keep their subscribers

"why can't they just show old TV programs from yesteryear?"

A few reasons:

1. Because streaming services would have to pay another company money to air those shows. Sometimes it's extremely expensive especially if the show was a huge hit. When they make their own programs, they own them and retain the profit.

2. Viewers also want to watch new shows. Younger viewers don't appear to enjoy older programs.

3. Old shows can be dated which don't appeal to modern audiences.

4. Many shows and movies are owned by competing companies which started their own streaming services. Therefore, many shows are no longer available. For instance, Netflix would have trouble obtaining Star Wars and Marvel superhero films which are shown on Disney+.

That last reason was a major catalyst for streaming services like Netflix to create their own programming.

Why do entities like Netflix and Disney+ feel the need to make their own content just to keep subscribers?

reply

Disney wants to make money from its Disney+ streaming platform and needs new content to keep people signed up.

Otherwise they drift to Netflix or Prime or Apple.

It's really not complicated.

I personally like the idea of the quick churning out of these shows, Disneyplus used to only have two live-action Star Wars shows, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, glad to see they're adding a few more Star Wars-related shows to their lineup in the upcoming months, including this one.

They doing it instead of comics
