Does Alfred have a back story in the original comic books? I'd just assumed that Alfred as a former SAS member was an invention of the Gotham series and that the true representation would be Michael Gough or Alan Napier.

Thanks. Clearly Alfred has changed greatly over time. Also the idea of spinning him off in his own story has already been done in the comic books - so not just a TV producer looking for a new angle.

I interpret that Alfred was retconned as an intelligence agent in the comics prior to the 89 film.
