Like a Real Life "When The Whistle Blows"

This show is lowest common denominator exploitative crap.

It's funny because in the show Extras, Andy has this idea for a show which becomes the total sell out, LCD comedy When The Whistle Blows.

And although the subject matter is different, this has Gervais selling out with some crappy, no integrity show about a guy dealing with his wife's death (easy emotional cash in) and has kept it going, cha-ching, for three seasons now pocketing the Netflix paychecks.

I'm sure he must appreciate this at some level and laugh to himself...

I don't think so. I think this kind of icky emotional manipulation is just his sensibility. I think it always was.

But Merchant seems to have operated as Lennon to his McCartney and prevented his worst excesses.

And it even sneaks in towards the end of Extras (in the special with the big blubbing Big Brother monologue). And Merchant was still involved then.

It's all through the stuff that Merchant isn't involved with: The Invention of Lying, Derek, After Life. This is what passes for 'depth' for Ricky Gervais. This kind of cheap mushy sentimentality. He's just not a very good writer.
