Saw this as part of a double feature and knew absolutely nothing about it. Ended up liking this movie more than the one I went for. I’m not sure why i hadn’t heard more about it.
Some great acting, entertaining story, plot twists. Not completely sure about MM in the lead role but I happen to like him as an actor so it didn’t bother me even though I kept expecting him to hop into a Lincoln and talk modern philosophy.
I think anybody who rips on the film is probably actually just nostalgic for Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and/or Snatch. Guy Ritchie hit the ground RUNNING with his first two films and set this high bar. Following it up is almost impossible, or perhaps is impossible in the minds of people who LOVE those two movies, which is a LOT of people.
If you haven't seen those two films, by the way, check 'em out. If you liked The Gentlemen, you'll like them two, too.
Now, while I love Lock, Stock and Snatch, I also really dug The Gentlemen. It's not as funny as those films, but it's stylish, slick, and engrossing. It's a first-class entertainment.
Top grade. That little pee-stain kid probably should've taken that money, huh?
I loved the showdown with Rosalind and Dry-eye.
Hugh Grant also bringing 110% of what was needed! What a great role! If I hadn't seen his name in the credits, I might've taken half the movie realising it was him!
He was really great in this. His character was well-written, too, but Grant nailed it so hard that it's difficult to imagine somebody else doing a better job.
