I feel like if they'd done an actual reboot, they'd be worried about once again being pigeonholed as their characters. This way, they can express a bit more range and use it to relaunch their careers more easily, as they themselves said in the first episode is needed.

I think that plays a role. And an actual revival would probably always piss of a part of the fans who disagree with the storylines or whatever. And it probably also requires a little higher quality of writing.
