Is TV a better format for 'Stars Wars' than cinema?

On one hand, cinema lets you experience the cutting-edge visuals and audio of a 'Star Wars' film in the format that has the most impact.

On the other hand, television means more "content". Ideally, it allows more room for world building and characterisation.

Is The Mandalorian better than every Star Wars movie you enjoy?

It's quite good, but too different to really rate against stand-alone films. I'd say the overall quality is on par with some of the better Star Wars films, but as it is broken into 16 episodes, with a total run time of 5 1/2 hours, it's a completely different sort of experience.

That said, I'd rather sit through 5 1/2 hours of the Mandalorian than any of the three prequels.

TV is ideal for something small scale like The Mandalorian, but will never replace the majesty of a proper cinema for the stand-alone films.

I agree. For me, ‘Star Wars’ is purely about watching bleeding edge visuals and sound design on the biggest screen with huge speakers. It’s a showcase of what blockbuster cinema can do.

If stretching the minute idea of a story (protect child and find his folks) thinly over two series to accommodate perfunctory cameos of characters from other series (and some good effects) is what Star Wars fans will settle for then TV is definitely the better format.

Disney certainly thinks that. Look how many shows they announced about random characters. god knows how any of them will turn out, since Mando was already thin on plot, but since it proved a success, now they are gonna milk tv to death.

IMO, the second season of ‘The Mandolarian’ was mostly designed as a launching pad for spin-offs and backdoor pilots. The actual storyline with Baby Yoda was undercooked.

To me the storytelling in The Mandalorian seems more focused and better-structured than in the Sequel Trilogy movies, though I enjoy the movies for the big spectacle.
