shareIt was momentarily jarring to see Bill Burr play a character in Star Wars, but once the initial "wait, is that... no it can't be... but it looks like... naw... omg it is him" passed, he was quite believable in the role.

shareIf you don't know Bill Burr, you don't know Bill Burr, but that's ignorance on your part, not a lack of fame on his. He's among the most famous standup comedians in the US. If I said I'd never heard of, say, George Carlin, It wouldn't make sense for me to justify my ignorance by stating he only had small roles in movies. Neither is an actor, so the fact that they only do occasional cameos when they act is immaterial.

shareThat's beside the point. You're equating the size of a comedian's role in a tv show with his popularity as a comedian, and I'm suggesting that isn't a realistic way to determine their level of fame.
shareRealistically, the way someone becomes well-known is through media exposure, therefore a show's popularity will effect how many people know him.
A major problem is that mass media is more splintered today. Previously, families watched three main channels and popular shows like The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson could literally make a comedian's career after one appearance. That's Carlin's era.
Now, cable and several wanna-be Johnny Carsons have much smaller audiences which means less exposure. Burr's era.
Carlin made national news because of his 7 dirty words routine. Decades later and it's still makes news. Pure classic routine.
Initially, I was sceptical of him being in Star Wars, but it ended up working for me and I wouldn't even mind if the character returned

I've noticed a trend in the Mandalorian of everyday life scenarios being peppered into the show. There was a scene with a waitress that was so earth-like, as if Mando was in a corner coffee shop and Flo was taking his order, and another with the mechanic. It's so un-Star Wars like, but at the same time it helps ground everything. Just because something is happen a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away doesn't mean they'd be all that different from us. I imagine on some planet somewhere there's a Seinfeld-like quartet of Toydarians sitting around Tom's diner kvetching.
I would watch that show!!!
