Matt was a sociopath the entire movie with no redeemable qualities and we are expected to think he changes after he briefly thought he may have killed his brother? Not buying it at all.

That was totally unbelievable.
Well the security guard did kill his entire family, so I think his goal was to lure Josh into a false sense of security and to then attack it at the right moment. For the most part he just wanted to cause harm to anyone who stood in his way or even inconvenienced him.
