GUESS THE SPOILERS! (this thread will end up with SPOILERS)

I'm posting this before watching because I know nothing about it, except for the trailer, have not read (or ever heard of) the book.
I want to see if my guess is close at all. :D This is just for fun.

What *I* think is going on...

I think the guy is actually the main character, is quantum physicist, did something to himself that sort of split his world that is now made up of his thoughts. He's old now and reliving a past non-existent relationship. And MAYBE his parents know he is just a loner and play along with his fake girlfirend.

That's a little to obvious though so I a looking forward to something off in left field.

Now, I shall watch and see just how far off I am.
