I didn't like all the coloured people

I know that they didn't have positions of prominence in the 1900s, and were extremely rare.

Therefore this is cultural appropriation.

reply

And Enola herself was browner than she ought to be for the time and for what her ancestry would allow. She should have been lily white.

reply

Not sure if you're joking, Millie is white and British as are both of her parents. She looked "lily white" to me in this, any "brownness" was probably a tan which worked for her character who wasn't brought up a proper lady and spent a lot of time outside.

reply

Millie was born and lived in Spain until she was four. She is white but she always either has a pronounced tan in summer or a fading tan in winter. My point was that getting a tan wasn't a thing for English girls back in Victorian times.

reply

That's dumb. If I was born in Spain and lived there until I was 4, I'm more prone to get tans and be tan for the rest of my life? Neither of her parents are Spanish, they're all white regardless of where they lived briefly.

Also, as I said, Enola isn't a typical Victorian English girl. They show her spending a significant amount of time outside growing up. So the "tan" she barely has still works for her character.

reply

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it think.

reply

Yes, self awareness is good :)

reply

How would you know ?

reply

Coloured people?

What’s the weather like down there on the plantation ma’ser?

In any case I doubt it’s the first time you didn’t like all the “coloured” people. Am I right?

reply

Funny how "people of color" is very in vogue to say, though.

reply

To the politically correct Liberal fascists:

"People of color" = Good
"Colored people" = Bad; in fact, blatantly racist!

Makes a lot of sense (rolling my eyes).

reply

Well, I would say that neither is preferable. That's just an umbrella term for anyone and everyone who isn't white. If you (generalized you not you personally) mean black, say black.

reply

I was being facetious over the wording, dear. It's not about who's ''liberal'' or a ''fascist'.

(that would be an eye-rolling simpleminded conclusion, wouldn't it)

reply

I know, dear, I was merely making a curious observation about politically correct phrases and politically incorrect phrases, which happen to be concocted & enforced by intolerant Liberal fascists.

reply

I see, thanks.

reply

I reported this racist post for moderators to review, and I suggest that others do the same.

reply

This site doesn't seem to be that actively moderated anymore. Plenty of posts get reported for bigotry, trolling and flaming, but nothing is done about them like when the site first started.

reply

Get over yourself snowflake.

reply

Isn't is something?

reply

I prefer to respond rather than report.

I say let him reveal his true colours. It's only by seeing attitudes like his that you a reminded how foul they are.

Coloured people. Like he doesn't realise that is considered an ethnic slur now. Still can't believe it. What a cock.

reply

So which set of words are allowed this week?

reply

Are words approved on a weekly basis? I didn't know that.

reply

Well you said coloured is now a racial slur when it wasn't before. So which set of words are allowed that won't be allowed next year or the year after

Black
Person of colour
Coloured

Which one causes you the least pain and cry racism to someone

reply

Yeah you’re trying to be cute but failing miserably.

You didn’t know the world coloured is linked to slavery and had been used as an offensive term towards black people for decades? You need to get out more.

reply

Not being anything. Genuine Question.

Which one is preferred before it gets changed again. So when you use it and are seen we can call you racist.

Honestly it is 2020 what isn't linked to slavery. Remember though only slavery of one colour. All other types of slavery throughout history are completly ignored.

reply

Seems that way. Mr. Racist-Finder. Blacks loved being called 'blacks' not that long ago, then that was out. Then came African American, yet no other race needs to insert the word "American" before their ethnic (Irish-American, Norwegian-Amercan, Lebanese-American? No). I heard Oprah refer to herself as a "Negro-woman" on one her shows (at least her standards are not ass-tight" like others). "Negro" is also not allowed. What makes BLACKS so special, then? Are you black and insecure, or just angry at the world? Find a real problem; you're annoying.

A wrong comparison? Well dayum, can’t argue with that logic.

I know Intothenight’s game and I don’t like it. Simple as that. You can insult me personally until you’re blue in the face and my opinion won’t change.

reply

You still haven't answered me

Which word is the one to use?

So i can screenshot this and then show when it is changed again.

reply

I don’t even have to think about it. If I use a word that is considered racially insensitive I am aware as soon as it comes out my mouth. It’s not about choosing a word of the week to be offended by, it’s just about not being a dick and purposefully using words that make others feel bad.

reply

So which do you use?

You are obvioulsy on the pulse of everything racial and termonology.

It's a simple question

reply

I use the person’s name, generally.

But to your point black and white is pretty black and white, to me anyway :)

reply

Was that so hard.

Now when it becomes unpopular to use that word i can show this and call you racist.

You see how this works.

You are calling someone racist for using the word coloured without asking a single black person. So how do you know they see that word as a racist slur. Even the racist slur of the word "Nigger" that comes from "negroid" which is a describing word is used more by black people than any other, strange that isn't it.

Be careful what you say down the line when calling someone black, one day they will say you are racist as you are doing to others right now.

reply

I didn’t call anyone racist, but Intothenight is, his many prejudiced posts confirm this. Good for you if you disagree.

reply

Your entire reply was to tell him how racist he is.

And what in his opening post is racist. The black population in 1900 england would have been a few thousand and they certainly wouldn't of held any positions of power or influence.

So if a white person that does something that a black person did and it gets called cultural appropriation then shouldn't the same be said when a character is obviously and blatently race swapped as in Lestrade.

Now before you come back with the inevitable reply of "well it's fiction what does it matter". Then i want a white Blade, Black Panther, Shaft, Axel Foley, i think you get the idea.

He may be racist, i have no idea but you can't just call people racist for having an opinion you don't like unless it is infallibly obvious it is racism, which isn't always the case.

reply

Again, my response comes from months of seeing threads created specifically to target black and gay people. I haven’t seen this show and I don’t care about it. We can be thankful that we know that he didn’t like the coloured people at least.

reply

I'm looking back through his post history and actually all I see is you insulting him.

I'm about 20 days back and your name has popped up many times replying to other people as well and all you have done as far as i can see is insult people you don't agree with regardless of what the argument or discussion is.

I think the problem is you not the OP.

reply

Yeah,no pattern at all. I didn't have to look far and I've commented on hardly any of this shit.

Grow up

reply

I dont' care about Intothenight. You did not reply to what I said because you're too per-occupied finding racism in whites.

reply

Fuck off. Blacks can be just as racist as whites. Don’t try to pigeonhole me into your view of anyone who isn’t an outright bigot as being a mindless leftist drone.

You may not care about intothenight but that’s who I was responding to. You suddenly made it about grilling me, so be it, but don’t pretend I was even addressing you. You threw your hat in here. If you don’t like what I’m saying well I guess you’ll have to deal.

reply

You addressed me after I made my first post. And yes, I see you all over this site with the same tone

reply

Ok, no worries

reply

I noticed the same thing.

"I reported this racist post for moderators to review, and I suggest that others do the same."

Way to go, Karen!

reply

Ha! I think you might have misused the insult there. Karens will generally have no problem with casual racism.

reply

No surprise there. liscarkat is the Karen here.

reply

[deleted]

I suggest not overly doing it unless you want it to go the way of IMDB and Yahoo, etc. Then we'll all have to jump ship and find YET another forum to voice opinions that people don't agree on.

reply

I understand your point, but sometimes racism must be confronted. If it brings down moviechat.org then maybe we don't need sites like this.

reply

The IMDB forums had to go away because they allowed bigoted invective and trashy hateful comments to run rampant. The moderators weren't doing their jobs and actually moderating the message boards. In the end the only way to deal with it was to just wipe it all away. Moviechat is well on its way to the same fate, as the moderators don't do anything when conversations blatantly violate the terms and standards that we all agreed to abide by when we signed up for this site.

reply

That's because you're being over-sensitive, which has become a sickness in our society with adults acting like self-absorbed, selfish, narcissistic inexperienced spoiled children. The term 'colored' is not enough of a "violation".

reply

No, it's because I simply expect online discussions to be cordial and civil, and not end up turning into endless exchanges of cheap shots, name-calling, trolling and flame-baiting like what constantly happens on this site. People are increasingly crass and rude, which has become a sickness in our society with adults acting like self-absorbed, selfish, narcissistic inexperienced spoiled children. Why is basic civility so much to ask these days?

reply

The flaw in your argument is that you see shutting down discussion as an effective way to "deal" with the problem when it is just the opposite. All you are doing then is the equivalent of drawing a line in the sand. "Good" people ( the people that agree with you ) on this side and "bad" people ( the people that don't agree with you ) on the other side. It is the equivalent of drawing battle lines.

reply

You're making a strawman argument. I wholeheartedly welcome disagreement. It sure would be a boring society and culture if everybody had the same opinions on everything. And it's very possible to disagree on things without discussions turning into cheap mudslinging sessions... or at least it used to be, back when people had decent character and discussed topics in good faith.

reply

There is a good way and a bad way to say this (see my topic).

You definitely went with the bad.

I don't care what you think about anything.

We can only hope.

reply

Intothenight will be pleased you finally arrived. Whistle and they’ll come like the dogs they are.

reply

Well, at least we know racism is still alive and well. At least you've pronounced yourself instead of lurking in the dark. This is what real racism looks like when looked at in the correct context. Mind you other people here will call others racist for far less.

reply

It's not racism when I want a historically accurate depiction of England.

reply

I have no problem with colored folk, i am not a racist. I dont care if you black or yellow.

reply

You have seen Asians in real life, don't you? You know they're not yellow, don't you?

reply

Black people aren't really black, and white people aren't really white.

reply

Yeap, but they're much closer to those colors than Asians to "yellow"

reply

Asians are quite variable in skin colour. Northern Chinese are as white as Northern Europeans whereas Cambodians are much darker skinned relative to them.

reply

Yeap, but both cases are far from being "yellow". It's more like a white (light skinned or more dark skinned) with a bit more yellowish tone, nothing more.
