liked movie but I felt that it was unfair that the maids had to die gruesome deaths. What did they do to deserve this?

Unless they were forced to live/work with the Le Domas family, then nah. Unlike Grace, they seemingly had no problem with the family sacrificing others. But, IF they did and they just couldn’t do anything about it otherwise they would pay the price themselves, then either way they messed up (well at least Dumbwaiter did lol).
That said being, we know that the family hadn’t done this particular ritual in many years. But does this really suggest that at least some of the maids weren’t aware of the family‘s history and/or their plans for that night? While certainly not impossible, let’s say the maids did in fact have no idea... it’s curious that the family didn’t tell them to take the night off or something. Then again... this was a rather deranged and reckless family. Not to mention the aforementioned dumbwaiter girl, who seemed genuinely confused and terrified, WAS hiding for a reason (providing it wasn’t a trap all along). So yeah, it’s possible the maids weren’t complicit in any of this. Who knows.
It's possible that they may not have known until that very night how messed up the family is. It is said that the deadly hide and seek game hadn't been done in 30 years. So they may not have known about it.

shareTheir deaths mainly showed what an asshole the coked-up jet set family member bimbo was in killing people unconnected to the curse. The maid who basically killed herself in the dumbwaiter after ratting out Grace to the Satanic family got what she deserved from The Lord.
