Differences In Types Of Horror Films
There are the more accessible horror films wherein the audience is protected from a close identification with the victim/s, and those where the audience is induced to identify more closely with the characters, the situations.
This film was more in the latter category. It created a dreary, inexorable mood - some audiences appreciate that effect, for some its too much, or incomprehensible. Another example of this, without the supernatural aspect, was 'Funny Games' - though with a wholly different premise, character of perpetrators & victims.
I found the film compelling, in spite of its supernatural aspect - it served as well as metaphor for mental illness, family dysfunction.
It was not a light entertainment.
