I might have to somewhat agree, and many film commentators/podcasts/articles have said something similar.
There's still varying levels of popularity (Scarlett Johansson's draw power is still stronger than a no-name actress from the CW). But there have been countless modern examples of stars who have not really made a huge splash in other films outside of their popular franchises, or have not posted consistent successes at the BO.
In the 90s and prior to that, Arnold, Tom Cruise and Will Smith were dependable names and their success rate was high. Today, a Tom Cruise movie is not a guaranteed hit...and might in fact be an outright bomb (like The Mummy). Will Smith hit it big with Aladdin and Bad Boys, but those were safer bets based on established franchises. He's had a lot of bombs, even when working with high profile directors.
It's the age of streaming and lots of entertainment options now. It seems audiences almost demand the movie have a good 80% and above score on RT to get their attention now. If not, that movie is just going to have to wait and get in the back of the line of their movie queue.
