Why the twist ruined the movie (spoilers)

Although much of this 'investigation' wouldn't happen in the real world (the police would have read every single text message and discovered the brother), this movie is trying for a REAL WORLD FEEL.

It's all happening on a computer or phone screen. These are our windows into the world these days.

So when this big twist occurs, it loses its real touch. It becomes far-fetched BS.

I really felt like there were two different movies here, stylistically speaking.

The first part of the film, up to the point where they discover the car in the lake, feels very fresh and original and different. I was really into it. Totally engaged.

The second part of the film, after the car is discovered, feels much more conventional and more like a typical Hollywood thriller.

One one hand, yes, I was disappointed with the direction the movie goes in and it knocks the film down a point or two in my book. But on the other, I wouldn't say it "ruins the movie." The film was still good overall. In fact, I put it in my Top 10 for 2018.

I don't know, the ending left a bad taste in my mouth. I would have been happier with the brother twist. More realistic and a bigger betrayal as a trusted brother.
