Anyone else suffer through the first episode?
NYT wrote such a polite article about this series, praising the choice of actors, but forgetting to mention the ridiculous storyline & dialogue -- not to mention the annoying camera angles & dizzying lens adjustments.
Thoughts?
It was not at all a good start. It was a combination of boring and incoherent. If I were Jewish, I’d be offended by the show’s Jewish stereotypes. So far, none of the characters is either likeable or interesting, except possibly for the Internet guy they bought out. The son who wants to take over the company is downright hateful. Brian Cox looks like he’s at death’s door and is not enough of a star to carry this show on his own, and no one else in the cast is a star at all. The second episode needs to be a huge improvement.

I don't think that makes him hateful.
Granted, I've only seen an episode-and-a-half so far, but from what I gather he's trying to save the company before his father drives it into the ground. He also clearly loves his family a lot, especially his father.
Like the Asian guy said, he never worked in his life, abused drugs, sounded like a d bag when he said dude.
I didn't think the character was that bad of a person. He seemed to want the best even If he doesnt know how to do it. That character is in a tough position in the business and family.
The family is not jewish...they are Scottish.

So I wouldn't hold it against viewers of just the first episode...

I've seen some slow burners in my time, but sadly this has yet to spark my interest and I'm sadly already three episodes in.
shareHmm, it's been a year, what do you think now? The characters are rather difficult to overcome a revulsion of to actually understand the show. I just want to see terrorists storm the compound and blow them up or something, or a tidal wave wash away NYC. Ugh ... and I bet the reality of these people is even worse.

I'm following the series but I literally can't stomach watching the screen for 45 minutes. The camerawork makes me nauseous. All those little "quick zooms" are ridiculously annoying and distracting. So I put it on and browse the internet on my ipad while listening and occasionally watching.

I watched the first episode last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. It's interesting to get this look, albeit fictional, into the American aristocracy. I also tend to enjoy stories about the world of business.
Brian Cox is good as always. Kieran Culkin's character is fun to watch. Sarah Snook is an underrated and underused talent, so it's good to see her as well. And Jeremy Strong does a fine job of the constantly-embattled son who is trying to save the company.
The camera work doesn't bother me at all. It feels vaguely documentary-like, somewhat similar to what you see in The Office. I'm okay with it.
If every episode is as good as the first then I'm going to enjoy this show quite a bit.
I've just watched the first episode and thought it was terrific. Don't get where any of the negative comments are coming from. I laughed out loud a few times, one for the "chicken coop" comment.
shareI thought I was going to shut it down after the first, but I am still watching out of morbid curiosity. I think it is a lot better than Billions, and pretty funny as well.
