Episode 3 of Rings of Power was better then Episode 3 of House of the Dragon

Just laying out facts here.

Please present your evidence.

The evidence is the feeling of intrigue and engagement and wonder that I felt watching the Rings of Power episode 3, and the feeling of distraction and boredom and wondering why characters were acting stupidly that I experienced watching House of the Dragon episode 3.

reply

That's probably uncurable.

The Queen of Numenor is not supposed to be a likeable character. I am not sure why you assume every female character is supposed to be. Were you complaining that Denethor was not likeable in The Return of the King? No, of course you weren't.

Galadriel is written to be quite abrasive, which the writer' probably saw as being "strong", so I will give you that one. I don't find her totally unlikeable. But the way she has been written is clearly a weak point of the show.

A good female character is Nori, who is also rebellious, but still likeable. Maybe that is partly due to the actress playing her. Both her and Galadriel are rebellious in a way, but Nori is also emotional and shows that she has a caring side (which is why she feels responsible for meteor man), and even when she is being kind of a jerk, it is done with a kind of softness and lack of earnestness.
Galadriel on the other hand is always scowling at people.

Arondir actually grew a lot on me this episode. I found his character kind of bland and annoying, but here he was more stoic and genuinely heroic. And the other elves around him were also allowed to shine, whereas in the previous episodes all of the white elves seemed to be made out to be jerks to make him look good.

HBO seems more interested in recapturing the fandom around Danaerys. I think a more compelling backstory is the history of the Valarians and their kingdom of Valantos. HoD relies too much on power plays over a throne so it feels like a retread.

reply

Would it be Game of Thrones without the politics though? That wasn't what bothered me about episode 3. I found the time jumps jarring, and the characters seemed to have changed and become one dimensional.

Alicent was intriguing in the first two episodes, now she is suddenly settled in as queen and giving Viserys well meaning advice. Rhaenyra just became a one dimensional moody teenager. Daemon became kind of pathetic and dumb and can suddenly kill 20 men in combat single handedly. The Crab Feeder was a fascinating mysterious character who just got dispensed with. There was lots of spectacle, but I found the substance lacking.

reply

Also the question of how did pirates hide in caves and without having all their ships burned? How did they win by hiding in caves?

That is what annoyed me the most.

Daemon was supposed be to an awesome warrior, he can only get "wolves" loyal to him this way. But that needs to be convincing, he needs to show some great moves, not as an idiot risking his life on a whim, and only win with a great deal of luck.

So yeah, HOTD ep3 is a downer.

reply

I mean they must have somehow had the foresight to store months worth of food in those caves right? Surely they could just do a siege and wait till they starve though, I mean isn't this what happened with caste sieges? Are we supposed to believe those caves were better stocked than a typical fort? And how do they retreat to the caves faster than a Dragon can fly? It seemed like GoT season 7 level writing.

reply

Exactly, to get the plot going they simply ignored a lot of things. To me that is just lazy writing.

The same as this show, if they spent more efforts on the plot and scripts instead of just special effect, both could have been much better.

Episode 3 is as bad as the first and second.

Galadriel is an unlikable bitch.

The Queen of Numenor is an unlikable bitch.

Because terrible writers have no clue how to create good female characters.

Dumbass ugly elves who allowed themselves to be captured alive by orcs argue with them. Elf gets his throat slashed with little to no blood. The warg is a giant chihuahua.

3 episodes in and still nothing remotely interesting or good .

you deleted your comment and posted almost exactly the same one. This was my reply to the original one:

Yes sorry, I posted by accident it as I was still writing and deleted it within 2 or 3 seconds. Exactly when you caught it.

Because terrible writers have no clue how to create good female characters.

They are written by the same writers, so it figures, but it seems to be quite common to present strong female characters this way these days, not just in this show:

1) Portraying women being rude, which to the writers means being strong. I think those are the interpretation of female writers.
2) Presenting men around the strong female characters as weak and cowardly or of low characters to alleviate women in comparison. Again, maybe I am projecting, but I think those are the works of female writers.

Both methods are of course in this show.

And there is the usual Disney way, presenting women as perfect, their only flaw was lack of confidence and submitting themselves to patriarchy, once they start to accept and embrace how awesome they are, they become invincible. Again, I still think those are the works of female writers.

It seems they hire mostly female writers to write strong female characters. I think that is the consequences of the "F rated" movement.

I hated GoT seasons 7 and 8, and I disliked 6. 5 was so...so . HotD I went in expecting nothing, but I am starting to actually enjoy it.
On the contrary, this Rings of Power I just couldnt finish 1 episode, thats how unentertaining it was. Simply put, it was boring.
I watched HotD ep3 which was almost ok (shitty editing, writing etc, but forgivable) and I liked it. I am curious what happens next.

Give me a reason to resume watching the Rings of Power, please. I will do it, as long as I have a decent, articulate reason.

reply

I had low expectations going into both. I liked the first two episodes of HotD more than Rings of Power, but Rings of Power is growing on me, and HotD episode 3 left me kind of flat.

For me the first episode of Rings of Power was the weakest. You had the opening with Galadriel being bullied by mean boys, which felt kind of stupid. All of the elves apart from Galadriel and Arondir were patronizing and annoying. Most of the episode focussed on the elves, which are the weakest part of the show.

The second episode doesn't take place in valinor at all. Halbrand is introduced, who is quite a cool interesting character. You have meteor man interacting with the hobbits, and Elrond goes to Khazad-Dum, the Dwarves and the Dwarven Kingdom are a lot better done than the Elves. There is none of Galadriel fighting against the Elfriarchy, or showing what a badass warrior she is, although she is for the most part still abrasive and scowlling. I warmed a lot more to Elrond's character in the second episode, he is quite charming and his interplay with Durin is quite fun.

The third episode sees Galadriel and Halbrand on Numenor, Galadriel is still kind of annoying, but there are some interesting developments with Halbrand. The Hobbit part moves kind of frustratingly slowly,, but I still like the characters. Arondir and some other evles are captured by orcs and used as slaves. This part was actually my favorite part of the series. There is some cool action and some tense scenes that were really well done. Nothing much of Elrond and the Dwarves.

So the series has been on on upward trajectory so far, there are a number of plot threads with different characters that look like they are going to converge, at this point I like all of the characters with the possible exception of Galadriel, who is at least more bearable in the situations she has been put in in the last two episodes.

reply

Well then... what to say...
I will just wait for whole season to be released, and if its truly upwards, I can binge
