anyone seen this ??
?
shareI just watched it. Not sure what to think of it.
shareI watched it recently and was not sure what the point of the movie was.
shareI’m not sure either. I tried to figure it out..
shareWell there were a few things but one central idea was to explore the following two opposing philosophies:
1. The idealism and humanism that says everyone should be equal and accepted just as they are.
2. the harsh practice of elevating some members of society over others, and choosing people based on worth.
As it turned out at the end, almost everyone engages in the latter - including Luce, as he himself was surprised to realize!
Nicely explained.
shareMe too ... except today. I didn't like it. It seemed to pile every ambiguity, ugliness and negativity onto the black people.
What was the point and how much did the teacher being a hugely fat and unattractive woman drive this script. And how can this Luce character predict the actions of everyone in his world.
Any school these days tells people do not share your lockers and in fact I think most schools do not even have lockers anymore.
Then the surly rude tone Luce uses on his teachers and even his parents. I have to get up early mom, bye.
Is that is norm for child rearing these days heaven help us all from the many psychopaths that will be roaming the streets ... or in government.
Whaaaaaa? What does the teacher’s physique have to do with anything? She looked like any other middle aged teacher.
This movie didn’t portray the norms of child rearing. This couple adopted a ten year old child out of an African war zone. He had severe ptsd and hid under his bed. They were cautious about every parenting move they made because of that, fearing any wrong move would trigger his ptsd again.
Luce as a star athlete and student is now indulged by his parents, lionized by his school, and not treated normally at all. The teacher even says something like ‘Luce can’t fail, he means too much to this school’. He is a trophy for the school and for his parents who were patting themselves on the back when he gave his honors speech at the start of the movie.
Yes, great movie.
shareI don't always agree with your, but you normally have some intelligent opinions. I just say this movie today and I'd be interested to know why you thought or think it is great? I really had a unpleasant reaction to it and felt it really played on all the black stereotypes. All the black characters and even the Chinese girl, the minority characters were scheming the system, and what represented the system was an overweight unattractive black lady. I hated that kid, and I really hated the parents for putting up with that crap no matter who or what he was or represented.
