I saw a couple of actors with what looked like serious facial burn scars (one guy had just holes where his nose should be and a woman with facial burn scars not unlike Niki Lauders facial scars).
Just curious if there was some kind of deeper meaning for showing them or is it some kind of diversity casting decision?

I interpreted it to mean that things had gotten really bad on earth. What had happened was unspecified but the disfigured faces were taken for granted by those around them.

It was specified since the fires were shown.
