Is it common for Japanese kids to have such stylish schoolbags?

It seems that all of them had one variant or another of the same fold-over school bag be it bright red or black. Are they particularly common in Japan?

It's common in elementary schools, usually with girls having red ones and boys having black ones.

Thanks. Very interesting article. I liked the uniformity of all the children having the same bag. Wish I had one of thee growing up. They were nice.

Yeah the bags are made to last throughout their elementary years, 5 years I think. They've used it for over 100 years now.
