Strong opening for a limited release.

Okay, I'm kind of the target audience for this film, me and my friends.

And we're not going to see it because they let Zellweger to her own singing, we agreed that we'd probably spend the whole film sitting there grumbling "Well THAT doesn't sound like Garland!", and we wouldn't have much fun. And that they ought to pull the film and fix the soundtrack before sending it into wide release, do what they did with "Bohemian Raphsody", that is, use recordings of the distinctive original performer's voice, along with sound-alikes when needed. Because then we'd get this great acting performance, and a Judy Garland who actually SOUNDS like Judy Garland.

I also don't recall Garland pursing her lips constantly and semi-squinting which Zellweger is doing. Her impersonation looks somewhat too broad (mugging, almost)

reply

I was struck by the tense lips and squinting and the stoop in her shoulders but I have no idea how authentic it is. I've only seen Judy Garland in films, though none recently, and one of her last, A Child is Waiting, was something like 6 years before her death . Unless there was some late home footage to prove otherwise I'll accept Zellweger's interpretation.

reply

You were too? I suppose some of Zellwegers' own mannerisms/gestures can't help but come through (especially if they want the film completed in a reasonable amount of time) unless it's an exact impersonation.

This movie was 5 years ago. What of note has she done since then?

So much for Zellweger's "big comeback".

reply

I believe she's semi-retired. She's done no movies and a TV mini-series in 2022.
