"You look nice"...spoiler

Mother sais "You look nice" to her daughter, giving her a picture that she painted. On the picture we can see a portrayal of the main character. We know that the other pictures sent to the main character were black and scary, so i presume the 1st picture is a hint that the mother and the daughter are actually the same person. "The daughter" is just younger version of the insane redhair lady and the story might have been created in her head. Another clues: in the story, Flora must not leave the property, (metaphor of being locked in an asylum), the motif of broken dolls (+ a statue in the garden) that can not be repaired, the whole Kurt Cobain reference putting the story into 1994 when the joely richardson character was at her 20s.. and of course the iris matchcut at the beginning of the movie..
