All the technology in this film is so wrong, that it is offending...

An IBM laptop in 1985 with a graphical interface and wireless in the room of a Russian junky. This technology only in 1985 is worth killing :)

The cell phones are way smaller than they are supposed to be in 1990.

A USB drive in 1990...

It's ridiculous.

The real offense is why people allow Besson to make expensive movies that fail to make a profit over and over again.

very good question.

I think it's some weird loophole with his company Europa. Kind of like what Uwe Boll had before he 'retired'.

reply

Yeah it's possible. I remember Uwe Boll's video game movies being subsidized.

It's so blatant that it's even funny... The wireless copy from the briefcase's HDD, in the hotel room!

Buses with led panels, flat widescreens in the french party or in '87 Moscow streets... the modern design and lighting of multiple locations, the clothes too all modern... and the 'CIA Special Ops' patches in the operatives' arms, in a park in Paris in broad light.

Don't forget the last scene when Anna is talking with Olga through web cam with HD quality.

I was like: Why they didn't make this movie set in actual days??? It does not add nothing to the story the fact that the story is set in the 90's, but whatever...

reply

Actually, they could have set it now, under Putin, call KGB GRU, and everything would have been fine... The KGB times are pretty much back...

I actually quite liked this film. The action was well choreographed and she made it very believable for being such a waif. It was like "La Femme Nikta" mixed with "Fresh" or "Miller's Crossing".

But yes the tech presented is a MASSIVE fail. What the hell was Besson thinking? It's hard to see that it was an oversight, because who in god's name could miss this throughout the entire production process? It's almost like it was some willful, intentional attempt at something. An alternate universe? It's just weird. I just pretended it was taking place in modern times. Maybe putting in 1990 happened at the end of production? it really does boggle the mind.

Remove that oddity and I actually liked this much better than I expected.

But.... the TECH! WHYYYYY!?

They just realised that KGB is no longer exist in 2010s so they changed it to 1990s at the last minute.

reply

Agreed. That's most likely what happened. I think I would have preferred a slightly altered world where the KGB still existed secretly rather than tech from 2019 showing up in the early 90's. But oh well. But yeah I bet you're right.

reply

Yeah it's so obvious like why would low-life punks like them have a nice laptop in the 80s Soviet? They don't even have an ATM card. Laptops were very expensive back then, even in the USA. Looks like they forgot Soviet was a communism.

I like your idea. KGB that still operates secretly today would be more interesting indeed.

reply

Because Besson knows that (1) people are stupid, and (2) if you give them entertainment, they will not care about the particulars.

reply

At the beginning there is a Mercedes G-class from 90s era which according to this movie soviets already had in 1985 in Moscow. This is ridiculous.
