There was plenty of variations upon artistic style which fans of anime will appreciate but the story itself felt a little lacklustre to my mind.
Great parahistory lesson about the unification of Japan though, a good means to present it in a way which isn't stuffy or boring.
Sad thing is that if this had been done by a Western studio it'd be deemed wacist by crybullies.
